The main character is so arrogant & ignorant... you hate him, but he has a good heart so you like him, too.The story is very good - imaginative & well paced. The writing style, though, is very formal and can be a little hard to see past. I will buy the next book, though, whenever it comes out. Lillo is turning out to be one of my favorite characters.

Death in the Traveling City Nathalie Mallet 9781463634568 Books Reviews
Another fun series, Mallet grabs and keeps going
Mallet's third installment in her historically-inspired fantasy series about the oddly-raised investigator of magical crime, Prince Amir, is as much fun as the first two. I appreciated the references to earlier characters in the series which connect the dots for those reading for continuity, but with a light touch. Feels a bit "lighter" in the history department than the more richly realized first book, but makes up for it in quicker plot progression and sense of fun among the characters even in the midst of dark events. Amir doesn't get it that he is attracted to the intimidatingly-competent woman in his life, but he finally does realize he must come to terms with his unwanted magical talents. If he wants to survive. Mallet plays him well as a sympathetic man who is still a product of his times and upbringing. But his macho side is endearing rather than offensive.
I loved every thing about the series, the character development and a believably realized world. I look forward to next book.
The story of Prince Amir becomes more complicated as he entered a society analogous to the old Mongol Empire.
An incredible abundance of new ideas about magic are explored, but Prince Amir remains the most feckless hero since Flink.
Perhaps the biggest shame about Prince Amir's story is that this is the end (for now, I hope).
Natalie writes a fast, intriguing series of mysteries set in a fantasy world and staring amateur sleuth Prince Amir. Accompanied by Milo, his trusty Eunach servant and the enigmatic and grouchy swordswoman Lilloh, he travels to the traveling city (a city which is comprised of buildings which are highly portable), and becomes embroiled in a mystery involving some murdered merchants.
Highlights in this one were Prince Amir being forced to eat some rather.. Er unsavory dishes while being a guest in a chieftain's home, and the coolly envisioned city they visit.
While I enjoyed this story, I found the magical parts less interesting than the mystery. While I realize Amir has no choice but to embrace his path as a shaman, It sort of bores me in comparison to the rest of the story.
Amir is smarter than the average bear and his fun observations and witty repartee with other characters make the book. I confess, I like to see Amir put in uncomfortable situations because he's so pretentious at times, his reactions are amusing.
Despite me liking Amir, my favorite character still is Milo. Although he gets less face time in this one, I enjoyed the fact that he and Amir appear to be getting a bit closer and I think he's an intriguing character. Milo needs some backstory or some angst. What's it really like working for Amir? Can't be all that fun, now can it?
Lilloh and the other character... ER... Forget his name, are less interesting to me. Lilloh's a bit rude to Amir, always pushing him and calling him a coward. She was more annoying than his last girlfriend LOL, although I prefer her, since I thought Eva used him. I hope Amir remains single. Otherwise, putting him in funny situations would be much harder, and I don't care for couples who argue all the time. Granted Amir is infuriating, but unless Lilloh loses her shrewish personality, I'm not voting for her either. The other guy is nice though. I'd like to see more of him, he kind of went off somewhere and didn't come back until the end of the story.
Overall, I'm intrigued by this story and can't wait to read the next one. Hopefully it will come out soon and be packed with more fun!
The main character is so arrogant & ignorant... you hate him, but he has a good heart so you like him, too.
The story is very good - imaginative & well paced. The writing style, though, is very formal and can be a little hard to see past. I will buy the next book, though, whenever it comes out. Lillo is turning out to be one of my favorite characters.
